There are systems made or imagined by designers that may involve more than one of life's principles within the biomimicry realm. Given that in recent years the topic of sustainability has been accentuated, each time we come across strategies that may be born from the inspiration of nature or that may contain some of its principles.
Recently, engineers from the University of Florida have proposed a strategy by which electric cars can share their electrical load while being driven. Under this vision, low-charge cars can buy others with higher stored energy, through a peer-to-peer control system located in the cloud (internet). To do this, each would need to have two batteries: a large slow-charging lithium-ion battery that would run the car, and a small fast-charging that could charge while it's running.
The cloud-based network would monitor the charge levels of the cars. If one of them starts to run low, the system would alert these and other cars with higher loads to buy and sell energy, respectively. Once the two cars agree to charge along the network, the cables would be connected and cruise control would be used to maintain the same speed in both vehicles until the transfer is completed. The engineers have also shown that although the system would work well, the total energy would deplete through time, so it would be necessary to have mobile charging stations, which have high energy levels to supply the deficit.
This great idea was born as a solution to the development of electric car system within the framework of sustainable solutions along with the elimination of fossil fuels in the coming decades. Some of the principles of nature involved here are:
